The calculation is based on route length, transport mode and cargo weight. The figure is added to the quote, so a customer can compare shipping options not only on price and transit time but also on environmental impact.
In practice the difference is substantial: for the same cargo, the rail route produces considerably lower emissions than air freight. This is particularly useful for companies reporting to international partners.
In parallel we are phasing single-use plastic packaging out of our warehouses. Stretch film is being replaced with recyclable material, and cardboard boxes are reused wherever possible.
The next phase will extend the programme to our suppliers — we are working on applying the same standards at our warehouses in China.
